A tour designed for learning the basics of ethnobotany of one indigenous culture from Costa Rica; the Cabecar, starts with a general review on costarican biodiversity, flora, culture, a bit of history and reviewing the basic concepts on taxonomy.
Next we will reach Central Market in downtown San José for a visit to the "Yerberos" people who sell medicinal plants, you will be able to "learn" through simultaneous translation, the different properties of the plants they sell, after ten minutes walk through downtown we will visit the National Herbarium, the biggest collection of botanical samples in Costa Rica.
After enclosing science with myth, we will start our ©Ethnobotany Workshop at Braulio Carrillo National Park, this is a group of specific personal projects from where you will be able to choose; dying a t shirt in different colors from botanical materials, making itch relief ointment from an specific plant, making ropes from different barks, making art objects with wicker and some more, your project will be done through out the trip.
Finally, after some hours traveling –some on a truck, some walking through jungle- we will finally arrive to where the Shaman lives, we will spend three days & two nights in here, learning from this shaman, some uses of plants within his vision of nature and myth.
Due to the remoteness and isolation of this place consider some lack of comfort and the need of some physical effort from your part, like carrying some of the food you will need, willing to help and cooperate in the achievement of goals during this tour, walking at least two hours on trails through the forest & jungle, and spending the night on a tent with a sleeping bag. I f you rather prefer someone else to carry your stuff, a local young man may do it for an extra charge.
