This is a tour specially designed for the avid birdwatcher, in it, expect to see the following birds: Scarlet Macao, Royal Flycatcher, White Whiskered Puffbird, Resplendent Quetzal, Prong Billed Barbets, ThreeWattled Bellbird, Emerald Toucanet, Jabiru, Shore Birds and Water Birds including Roseate Spoonbill, Several Tanagers, Warblers, Aracaries, Jacamar, Lovely Cotinga, Great Green Macaw, Agami Heron, Yellow Crown Night Heron and many different Hummingbirds.
Day 1:
Arrival at Juan Sta Maria International Airport, where you will be met by one of our representative that will take you to your hotel, after 15 minutes transportation, check in at the Martino Hotel Resort, at the beautiful area of La Garita.
At dinner,Mariano will give you an introductory lecture on Costa Rica Birdwatching.
Overnight at Hotel Martino.
Day 2:
Carara National Park:
After breakfast, we will departure for our first birding destination: Carara National Park, on the way, expect to stop several times on route in order to watch some birds, Black Neck Stilts may be found sometimes at the Garita Damp.
Overnight at Villa Lapas Hotel.
Day 3:
Carara National Park:
Very early light breakfast (before sunrise) and departure to Carara, afterwards, return to your hotel for a much better breakfast, after it, some time at leisure for avid birding in the Tarcoles area, after lunch, tour to the Guacalillo Mongrove.
Overnight at Villa Lapas Hotel.
Day 4:
Monteverde:
As we drive through open areas from sea level till we reach the beautiful cloud forest
we may be able to spot some good Mot-mots, Parrots, Rufus Napped Wren and other dry areas birds. Lunch at Palmeras. Afternoon for hummingbird observation and road boundaries.
Overnight Hotel Fonda Vela.
Day 5:
Monteverde:
Early walk at Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve, “Quetzal” paradise! Afternoon walk at the Santa Elena Reserve looking for some good mix flocks containing birds such as Tanagers, Warblers, Wood Creepers and others.
Overnight Hotel Fonda Vela.
Day 6:
Guanacaste's Dry Forest:
After breakfast a nice drop on elevation to a hotter area, the tropical dry forest
Afternoon birding at Palo Verde National Park a bird sanctuary for local and migrant species, home of the Jabiru ….
Dinner & lodge at Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin.
Day 7:
Rincón de la Vieja:
Early birding at Rincón de la Vieja Volcano
Looking for Manakings, Guans, Parrots and others, lunch at the hotel
Afternoon birding around the ranch and roads.
Dinner & lodge at Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin.
Day 8:
Arenal Volcano:
After breakfast we’ll stop along the road for possible new lifers !
Long drive crossing from Pacific to Caribbean side, other world for bird lovers !
Lunch at the hotel Arenal Lodge
Afternoon birding at hangings bridges at Arenal Rain Forest.
Dinner & lodge at the Arenal Lodge.
Day 9:
Full day to Los Chiles – Caño Negro area–
Early departure from Arenal to los Chiles and spend four hours at Rio Frio river spotting Kingfishers, Anhinga, Egrets and POTOOS !
Overnight at Selva Verde Lodge.
Day 10:
Sarapiqui – Caribbean low lands-
After breakfast, a “short” drive to Sarapiqui area where we going to spot rain forest birds such as Ant Birds, Antpittas, Warblers, Tanagers and Toucans.
Meals & lodge at Selva Verde Lodge.
Day 11:
Tortuguero Wetlands
Breakfast on route, – nice drive on the Caribbean lowlands till we get to the Parismina River, so we start a boat adventure by rivers, canals and lagoons.
Afternoon birding by the beach of Tortuguero and around the lodge.
Meals & lodge at the Evergreen Lodge.
Day 12:
Birding at the Tortuguero National Park
Early breakfast -coffee and cookies- before we start birding in a boat trip for a couple hours, and just after the boat trip -before birds go “ Tranquilo”- we will be going on a trail walk at the Tortuguero National Park. After this, breakfast and break! Afternoon birding from a boat ride, what to look for? Great Green Macaws and Agami Heron! Meals & lodging at the Evergreen Lodge.
Day 13:
– Back to the crowd – San Jose city.
We’ll spot some good birds along the road to our hotel in the western area of San José. Overnight at Hotel Martino.
Day 14:
– Tearful day and great memories for everyone!
