An ecological tour… Can someone explain me what does it mean? |

I see web sites dedicated to tourism in Costa Rica´s that try to sell you an ¨ecological tour¨ but what does it means to be part of an ¨ecological tour¨? Does it mean I will be visiting any protected area guided by a member of Greenpeace? Or does it means I will be transferred in a hydrogen – fuel car and travel in a boat using electrical motor, so our visit won‘t produce any negative impact to the environment? I still don’t get what they are trying to communicate.
I’ve done some informal research, I have called some tour operators asking for information about these tours, and a nice sales person tells me that apparently, taking an “ecological tour” means you will visit a protected area; a national park, a wildlife reserve or simple a waterfall surrounded by secondary growth. That’s all. |

I think this kind of propaganda is tricky, not serious, and demonstrates the absolute lack of quality you will receive out of such excursion or tour if you ever take one.
If you observe carefully, the really good and successful tour operators sell their product without having to use such announcement of being “ecological”, they do more emphasis on the expertise from their guides, or show letters from satisfied clients. Leading tour companies that sell nature trips in Costa Rica put a lot of effort on their web sites by displaying a large number of high quality pictures and produce a fair amount of literature not only from their successful trips, but also provide information related to the local natural history, specially birds and Flora’s species accounts. |
